WeThinkCode_ at the FNB codeFest

In case you happened to miss it, First National Bank hosted the FNB codeFest this past week and boy did you miss out. FNB managed to get some outstanding talent under the same roof for 48 hours for some good old fashioned coding. Among the crowd was of course WeThinkCode_ students doing a wonderful job of representing as part of the Gauteng Provincial Government team and various other Rand Merchant Bank teams.

The GPG in its pursuit of an improved relationship with the youth approached WeThinkCode students to come up with a proof of concept to improve service delivery across Gauteng departments.

So a a team consisting of a tester from rubric, two coders from GPG and eight WeThinkCode_ students was able to come up with a great idea which would virtually put government services in your pocket. Imagine not having to stand in queues or even going to your local government department office at all… Well thats what this app would do to overhaul the way services are delivered to the general public.

Some of the amazing features include crime maps, emergency services, job applications , pre-filled forms and the ability to file complaints at the tip of your fingers.

Using languages such as JavaScript, PHP and SQL and in just three days the team of students was able to prove that this idea was possible and feasible. With forty eight teams participating  they were able to achieve a top ten spot.
